How to Host a TradeShow

How did YOU get the job of hosting a tradeshow? Was it low man on the job? Everyone has to take a *turn*?  For many it’s an unwelcome job, a duty, about on the level of *it’s your turn to clean the restrooms!* type of job.  Rethink this *job* and have a tradeshow success!

First this is NOT just Cold selling. With very few exceptions, tradeshows attendees are there for a reason. Many have come from far away to attend. All have put a bit of their lives on hold to attend. Why? Each one has a reason to have done so, and it’s true many don’t INTEND to buy AT the show, But, ALL came because of interest.  Interest in the subject of the tradeshow, interest in the businesses, or products.  Interest in something means there is a chance to fulfill that NEED and by doing so winning a customer.

Ever notice and really watch the tradeshow booths that are the MOST popular, the ones that people gather around in crowds? What sets them apart from the booths that people scurry past, making sure not to meet the eyes of the one behind the booth (hope that’s not you behind the booth).   I’ve heard many come away saying business was just bad, the economy was bad, people just weren’t interested, while others had the BEST show ever.  What difference could it be, same show, same economy.

The booths that everyone gathers around are professional, are prepared AND treat everyone like FRIENDS, like they are GLAD to see them. People at their booths KNOW who is there to HELP them get the answers they want. They take down their information, they treat everyone there like honored guests, not like something to be avoided.

As people walk up, meet their eyes. Many are afraid to do that. When you greet friends that is how you do it. As a host it’s your responsibility to make the first move. Be inviting, not overpowering, not trying to sell, but act as if you are so happy to meet them.  As if YOU are happy to be there.

Next BIG step is dress professionally. Not everyone needs to dress in a *banker’s suit* but fit the part of YOUR business. If you sell wearables, then why not DRESS it?  One other BIG thing that can make you appear professional…..name badges. Let them KNOW who you are. Name badges can make a BIG impression on people. Is your’s ordinary? Or does it express YOUR company, your personality? Some businesses have a need for more standard name badges, and if that’s the case, it’s like many things, something you can’t do anything about. But, for most, it can be an individual thing, something to set your company apart.

We can help you out with name badges. Design, many times shape,  different themes…and we have many different sources. Just let us know what we can do to start your tradeshow experience off to a good start.
